The San Francisco 49ers captured their second Super Bowl title with a
dominating offense and a defense that tamed Miami's explosive passing attack.
The Dolphins held a 10-7 lead at the end of the first period, which
represented the most points scored by two teams in an opening quarter of a
Super Bowl. However, the 49ers used excellent field position in the second
period to build a 28-16 halftime lead.
Running back Roger Craig set a Super Bowl record by scoring three touchdowns
on pass receptions of eight and 16 yards and a run of two yards.
San Francisco's Joe Montana was voted the game's most valuable player. He
joined Green Bay's Bart Starr and Pittsburgh's Terry Bradshaw as the only
two-time Super Bowl most valuable players.
Montana completed 24 of 35 passes for a Super Bowl-record 331 yards and
three touchdowns, and rushed five times for 59 yards, including a 6-yard
touchdown.
Craig had 58 yards on 15 carries and caught seven passes for 77 yards.
Wendell Tyler rushed 13 times for 65 yards and had four catches for 70 yards.
Dwight Clark had six receptions for 77 yards, while Russ Francis had 5 for
60.
San Francisco's 537 total net yards bettered the previous Super Bowl record
of 429 yards by Oakland in Super Bowl XI. The 49ers also held a time of
possession advantage over the Dolphins of 37:11 to 22:49.
