- Oregon State's Gary Payton scored a national-high 58 points in

- Cleveland State, Kentucky, and North Carolina State were on NCAA
probation.
- Tragically, Loyola-Marymount's Hank Gathers collapsed on court during
the West Coast Conference tournament. He later died.
