83-58, in the WCC’s first-ever neutral site tournament in Las Vegas. Micah Downs
won Tournament MVP honors after going 7-of-9 in the semifinal win over Santa
Clara, followed by a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds in the title

40 points, 105-65, in the first round. The Bulldogs then topped host USD in
front of a jam-packed JCP crowd, 76-68. Gonzaga earned the league’s automatic
bid with a three-point win over Santa Clara.

The 1990 tournament was cancelled when LMU’s Hank Gathers, the two-time tourney
MVP, collapsed during a semifinal with Portland and died that evening. He had
just completed an alley-oop dunk to make the score 25-12, LMU. The Lions were
awarded the NCAA bid and advanced to the regional championship, falling to NCAA
champ UNLV.
